A reusable shopping bag can return to the cupboard carrying more than groceries. Spills, soil and moisture deserve a check before the bag is folded into a tight bundle for the next trip.

The Food Standards Agency’s food-hygiene guidance recommends keeping raw foods separate from other foods in shopping bags and checking for spillages. A bag that looks clean may still have contamination after carrying raw meat.

Give different loads a clear place

Keep dedicated bags for raw foods and avoid using those for ready-to-eat items. Pack cleaning products separately from food. A simple label or colour choice can make the arrangement easier for everyone in the household to follow.

After unpacking, inspect the interior, seams and handles. Deal with spills according to food-safety guidance and the bag’s material. Some fabric bags can be washed; coated, insulated or plastic-based bags may require different treatment or disposal when contaminated or damaged. Do not assume every reusable bag tolerates the same hot wash.

Drying belongs in the routine

After suitable cleaning, open the bag fully and allow seams and corners to dry before folding. An insulated lining can hold moisture where it is difficult to see. Do not put a damp bag directly into a stack of clean ones and assume the outside feeling dry is enough.

Choose a storage location where clean bags remain separate from dirty shoes, pet equipment and other contaminated items. Put a damaged bag aside so it does not return to service by habit.

Reuse works best when the item stays suitable for its job. Keep only the number of bags you can store and maintain properly, and use local disposal or recycling guidance for those that can no longer be cleaned safely. A small unpack-clean-dry routine makes the next shopping trip easier to prepare.
